Who controls the Internet? ARI’s Donna Austin explains31th March 2014
Melbourne, Australia – 31 March 2014: Last week, the topic of Internet Governance was propelled onto the global stage as the US Department of Commerce announced its intention to transition key Internet domain name functions to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
The announcement generated significant debate around the world and resulted in a large amount of confusion about what it means for the Internet.
In response, ICANN published a blog to clarify some misconceptions and to shed light on its role in Internet governance.
Lawrence E. Strickling, head of the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), also sought to clear up any confusion in a statement he wrote during the week about the issue.
Given the importance of the announcement, media organisations around the world have reported on the topic.
The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) convened a panel of experts from the Internet and telecommunications industries to discuss this issue on their TIA NOW online news channel.
On the panel was ARI Registry Services’ Policy and Industry Affairs officer Donna Austin, Bloomberg BNA’s Managing Editor Paul Barbagallo, and Communications Daily’s Wireline telecoms reporter Matthew Schwartz.
The first half of the program is dedicated to the ICANN issue, with a special live cross from the Washington D.C studio to Singapore to get insights from Ms Austin who was participating in policy discussions on the issue at ICANN’s 49th meeting held in Singapore.
