Qatar Domains Registry, a department of the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR), today officially relaunched the .qa country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) in a bid to develop a stronger online presence for the country.
The revitalised .qa ccTLD will operate on a Domain Name Registry System designed by AusRegistry International, and will utilise the organisation's 10 years of experience in the management and operation of Domain Name Registries.
AusRegistry International was selected by ictQATAR in September 2009 to develop a new administrative, policy and technical framework to place the .qa ccTLD in line with international best practice.
Under the terms of the contract, AusRegistry International's software will also be used to launch the Arabic representation of Qatar (قطر.) as an Internationalised Domain Name (IDN). The introduction of the قطر. (.qatar) IDN ccTLD will allow Arabic speakers across Qatar and the world to navigate the Internet using their native language and will represent a significant advancement in the navigation experience for Arabic speakers within the region.
Adrian Kinderis, CEO of AusRegistry International, welcomed the milestone.
"We have been working very hard over the past two years to ensure the success of this project and I'm very proud of the results we have achieved. The team at ictQATAR and our staff on the ground in Doha and at our headquarters in Melbourne deserve praise for delivering a best of breed, robust and stable registry solution," Mr Kinderis said.
"We completely customised our solution to address the needs of ictQATAR to revitalise the .qa ccTLD and launch the قطر. (.qatar) IDN ccTLD. This included the purchase and configuration of hardware equipment, developing unique registry software to handle the various policy and business requirements that are specific to the region, and deploying staff to Doha to train and educate ictQATAR on the use of our licensed product."
Mr Kinderis said the work conducted with ictQATAR complemented AusRegistry International's work with other countries looking to make the most of their Internet presence.
"We now work with numerous countries across multiple continents to help them ensure the continued expansion of the Internet in their respective regions. Our work ensures the delivery of a critical piece of national infrastructure and we are honoured to be working on projects with such a high degree of national importance. We are currently in talks with other countries in the Middle East and are developing further strategic partnerships to continue our global expansion."
Mr Kinderis noted that the relaunch of Qatar's Internet identity comes at a time when the domain name landscape is set to be revolutionised.
"At a time when the Internet is about to go through arguably it's greatest change in history, with the launch of new Top-Level Domains, it is rewarding to work with the talented people of ictQATAR to ensure the .qa ccTLD remains the trusted domain for the people of Qatar."
